I Want to Become a Voter

Voter Registration Requirements

In order to register to vote you must meet the following criteria:

  • 18 years old at the time of the next November election (17-year-olds may register if they will be 18 by the next Election Day)

  • Resident of Redding

  • U.S. citizen

When first registering, you must be able to prove your identity and residency. Typically, this is done with a driver’s license or other preprinted photo identification (e.g., employee ID or school ID, for example), current utility bill, bank statement, paycheck, etc., along with the last 4 digits of your Social Security number. If there is no ID or other proof submitted and we cannot verify you via your Social Security number or other info, you may be asked to step out of line at the polls to present proper identification. For your convenience, we suggest sending the required proof of residency and identity in advance so your experience on voting day is speedy.

To Enroll in a Political Party

You may enroll in a party when you become an elector or at any time either online (link to SOS registration page) or in-person at the Registrar of Voters Office (100 Hill Rd.).

You may change party affiliation at any time; but you cannot vote in a party caucus or primary or be eligible for party privileges for three months following a change from one party-to another.

If you are not a member of a political party, you are listed as “Unaffiliated” on the voter lists. You can enroll (affiliate) with any party up until noon on the day before an election or primary in person.
